THE BLUES: MORE DIVERSE THAN YOU THINK
So I’m playing a blues gig in August. In prepping for the gig, I’ve been listening to and thinking about the blues a lot. Looking through the setlist I’ve been compiling over the last few days, I noticed how diverse the blues can be.
The most frequent knock on the blues is that “It’s all the same.” People always complain that all blues songs have the same song form, and they make fun of “blues musicians” for being so limited.
That is just not true. While the blues is certainly rooted in tradition, it’s much more creative and varied than people think. Looking through this setlist, only a couple songs actually follow a strict “blues form.” The rest are no more rooted in 12-bar than any song in rock music.
And let’s face it: Playing the blues is fun!
